LM - Born and raised in British Columbia, Lyndell Montgomery has always known music as a medium of expression. Growing up, Lyndell studied violin and piano through the Royal Conservatory of Music and she was also heavily involved in school band(s). She dabbled in a bit of everything: french horn, trombone, trumpet, euphonium, tuba and percussion before settling predominantly on bass and violin. Coming from a classical and gospel background with a tip-of-the-hat to ragtime and jazz, she has embraced music as not only a career, but also as a life force. She’s “one of those people” who can make a joyful noise regardless of the instrument that’s put in front of her. Lyndell credits her uncle as being a major influence to her own musical development. He could, would, and did play everything. From banjo to drum kit to the tin whistle and beyond, there was always music being played when he was around. It would seem that there is always music being played when Lyndell is around too.
For 10 years, Lyndell Montgomery has been an integral component of the Ember Swift project. Over the span of the last decade, she has been featured on all but one of Ember Swift’s nine releases, including a DVD entitled Witness: Live in Australia 2005, which showcases live concerts and road life from their 2005 Australian tour.
As Ember Swift tours and performs between 150-200 shows per year in Canada, USA, Australia and New Caledonia, Lyndell is usually on the road or on the stage. When she is not traveling and performing, you will find her making music with others or purring in her organic garden .
Lyndell has collaborated with many other artists, on both studio recording projects and live performances. Some folks she has played and/or recorded with include Pete Seeger, Xavier Rudd, Holly Near, Kinnie Starr, Alix Olson, Doria Roberts, Bitch, Pamela Means, The Painting Daisies, Melissa Ferrick, Garnet Rogers, Karen Savoca, Miranda Stone.
Aside from music and composition, Lyndell is one-fourth of the artistic team that made up the Vancouver (BC) performance troupe Taste This. In 1998 Taste This was approached with a publishing opportunity through Press Gang Publishers. Shortly thereafter, the multiple award-winning book entitled Boys Like Her Transfictions was created. Not only did it meet a wide underground embrace, Boys Like Her also now appears on several College and University course reading lists across N.America.
